There are almost 1.4 million torrents at our users’ fingertips. By continuously moderating torrents on the site, the staff strive to make our members’ experiences more rewarding with the limited amounts of time that every user has. To make sure that you not only find exactly the music that you’re searching for, but also find it in a very high-quality form (both in terms of audio quality and information content), we are announcing the first wholesale uploading rules revision in more than three years. The new rules have been incorporated into the existing Upload rules page. Since that last update, we’ve added new rules here and there in a piecemeal fashion as we tinkered with ways to ensure that our users got high-quality music that was fully tagged and informative. We may never evolve a suitable set of rules that makes everyone happy but we’ll keep trying to make improvements as the years go by and our site continues to grow.

Every section of the uploading rules has been updated and revised. Site Wiki articles are referenced wherever we need to supply more information about a particular topic in the rules but just can’t find the space to place it on the actual rules page. To improve the lines of communication between users and staff members, we have also updated the System-generated messages that users receive for reported torrents. These PMs that are sent out to users through our torrent reporting system will now all reference specific uploading rules, making the reasons for torrent removal more transparent. The rules are still not perfect but hopefully they will make staff responses to problematic torrents both more predictable and more comprehensible for our uploaders. This will result in fewer problematic uploads and, when bad torrents are inevitably found, allow staff members to deal with those reported torrents more efficiently.

• Ogg Vorbis is no longer an allowed format.
• AAC will be restricted to iTunes WEB torrents.
• Lossy-mastered torrents are more clearly defined.
• WEB-sourced audio files must be uploaded exactly as you received them from the online music retailer, in terms of bit depth, sampling rate, and track order.
• Hybrid WEB torrents will be allowed under strict rules (e.g., retail downloads with non-uniform formats).
• HDCD rips are no longer allowed.
• FLAC log trumping has been clarified with respect to ripping software and log scoring.
• A recommended FLAC compression standard of Level 8 is now in effect.
• Information on how to determine album editions has been added.
• Lossy formats derived from FLAC files must have the same sampling rate as those FLAC files.
• All music torrents must have a torrent folder (this includes torrents with only a single file).
• Bonus material torrents may be trumped by complete album torrents.
• The maximum character length for audio files is 180 characters for new torrents.
• Torrents with unnecessary nested folders are open for trumping.
• Compilation albums must have file names that start with the track number.
• Game discs that have a verifiable Redbook-compliant audio layer are allowed.
• Tag trumping will be allowed in several new scenarios.
• Torrent inactivity rules have been codified.
• Commercial template and clip art packs will be allowed as applications.
• We will no longer allow advertising in torrent file names or tags.
• Embedded artwork is now limited to 512 kb.
• Downsampling of digital material is selectively allowed.
• Torrents without the Scene label cannot have references to the scene release group.
• Soundboard recordings with a master tape in the lineage are allowed.
• How to determine the difference between music and spoken word audio is described.
• Non-music audio files must have a minimum average bitrate of 32 kbps.
• Non-music audio files now have optimal formats for lossy encodes (V0 (VBR), V2 (VBR), and V8 (VBR)).
• Application torrents without release descriptions will be deleted when reported.
• Complete comic volumes or series packs can now trump smaller collections of the same comic series.
• ebooks cannot be uploaded in archives.
• ebooks are now under new scan quality standards.
• ebook packs are prohibited.
• ebook torrents are now trumpable, with retail versions of the ebook being preferred over scanned versions.
• eLearning videos must be related to music or music-associated software.
• Commercial album covers have always been exempt from our rules regarding nudity, so that has been made explicit in the rules.

Addendum 1: Please do not report any Ogg Vorbis or AAC torrents during the grace period. Staff members will work on these torrents over the course of the next few months.
Addendum 2: There is a two (2) month grace period for single file folder trumping. Please do not trump single file torrents with no folder until two months from this posting.

Update: AzzA has now returned the donation money; and is attempting to halt the termination of BTN’s servers.

Further to the information in this forum post, it can now be proven that AzzA has stolen funds from BTN, including all recent donations. We are in the process of individually contacting the affected Donors seeking to have your donations returned to you.

Furthermore AzzA has now cancelled all BTN’s accounts with its suppliers, immediately terminating all BTN’s servers. Based on AzzA’s prior attempts to harm BTN we’d anticipated this and has already moved the critical services, however BTN’s size means we will be juggling our now limited resources until we can arrange alternatives.

While this means there will be some performance issues and minor loss of functionality over the coming days, BTN will remain online and with the Staff body united, we will work through these challenges, we will overcome them and we will be better for it.

We are now putting in processes and controls to make sure these financial issues do not happen again, including more rigor around how and when donations are used; and that donations will be used in a way to give BTN the best value for its members. No one individual will be able to make financial decisions and all expenditure will be accounted for including consideration of ongoing obligations. In other words, we wont overspend or make financial commitments we cant keep.

We’ll continue to keep you informed, we are committed to open and honest communication and are happy to answer any questions or concerns you may have, we might take a while to get back to you but don’t be afraid to ask.

This time not an announcement of something or another, but a request to our uploaders for a bit of spring cleaning. While moving torrents over from our exploitation category to the new softcore category I noticed a lot of torrents with dead links to screenshots. I want to ask all our torrent uploaders if they can check all their uploads for dead links to screenshots and add in new working ones.

If possible use an imagehost such as imgspc or imgur that don’t delete older images. This goes especially for project torrents where screenshots are actually mandatory. I know this is probably going to be time consuming, but since CG has a reputation of not letting torrents die then we should also do our best to get some upkeep on our older stuff.

Sometime toward the end of this week, a 24 hour free leech will commence. The purpose of this is to stress test everything while systems are monitored, so we can fine tune things to work with our available hardware. Since we are running with a configuration optimized to include two of our downed servers, breakage should be expected.

Since our last update announcing our latest round of promotions we’ve been hard at work giving the site some much needed updates. Here’s a list of some of the things we’ve changed over the last few weeks.

* There have been a few major feature additions to TehConnection lately, you may have already noticed the first one, Statements.

You can find the new statements feature by clicking on [ View Statement ] next to your upload/download stats on your profile. This allows you to track how and when your upload stats change! We plan to add some graphs and cool stuff like that in the future.

For a long time we’ve felt the bookmarks system was lacking a little, so welcome the Watch Queue to the site’s ever growing list of features. Eventually we plan to remove Notifications and Bookmarks and merge them all into the Watch Queue. Think of the Watch Queue like your Netflix Queue (if you’re a Netflix user) - add to it all the films you want to see, so next time you’re in the mood for a movie, just pick one from your watch queue! The watch queue also allows you to add movies via their IMDB page if they’re not already on the website, and as soon as they hit the website you’ll receive a PM notification about it; we think this is a great feature to allow people to keep track of when movies they’re excited about are uploaded onto TehConnection.

You can access your Watch Queue by clicking on the navigation bar below the site logo (next to where you invite people).

* Access to the TehConnection IRC Support channel is now available from the ‘IRC’ link at the top of every page
* The ‘Discuss’ link for the movie of the week has been added to the front page MOTW widget to encourage discussion of the MOTW. It’s now easier than ever for you to discuss how much you loved Inception as MOTW.
* You’ll now receive a PM notification when one of your uploads is reported
* WEB-DL and h.264 have been added as source/codec options when uploading torrents.
* A bug causing very large NFO ASCII art being cut off in torrent release descriptions has been fixed
* A bug preventing you from being able to search properly when looking at your requests only has been fixed
* Top 10/100/250 seeders have been added to the Top 10 page, click here to see who’s seeding the most!

12 HOURS OF OPEN INVITES

Oh… hey. Tomorrow arrived.

Recently we had an issue with our system that caused seed times to be improperly tracked, meaning that many people were shown as having erroneous hit and runs. Most of you probably didn’t even notice it, but in any event, it was an unfortunate bug. I suppose it would be cliché at this point to blame ES, but I’m going to do it anyway. *shakes fist at ES*
This issue has since been fixed, and 2 weeks of seed time has been added to any torrent active since February 29th 2012. If you still have hit and runs it is likely that these are genuine and not caused by the recent issues.

We want to thank the members of BTN for being patient during that time while we were working on getting the problem resolved. To that end we have decided to open invitations to all members for 12 hours.
Everybody has been given one invite and will be able to use it any time between now (midnight GMT) and 12 hours from now (midday GMT). Elite+ may send unlimited invites during this period.
Our normal rules regarding invites still apply during this time, and they can be found here. You are responsible for the people you invite.

At the conclusion of this drive, BTN will revert back to its old system of only Masters and above being able to send invites. Most of you will still have invite codes, so use them!

Alright everybody, settle in for a bit of a read.

I normally don’t bother posting any news, but figured I should just point a few things out to everyone. AO is a community based on its users, we simply cannot exist without you (who wants to upload to a site with no users anyways). This is true in a few places on the site.

We need uploaders, people with decent seed boxes or home connections that can help supply content. We also need our users to help supply content. Currently (I might be wrong) all user classes can upload. If you notice something that’s not on the site, but you figure someone else might like it, UPLOAD IT! Share it with everyone. Also check the requests section from time to time and help a fellow user out if you can. This helps the site continue to operate smoothly. It also helps that we have our auto running again. This brings me to my other point, donations.

We NEED donations, but please don’t confuse this post with begging for them. We simply cannot exist without them. Our servers, the site hosting, the seedboxes behind the scenes feeding you content, all these things cost money. Your donations are what makes us able to fund everything, the more money we get each month, the better stuff we can buy, and in turn the better site we can provide to you.

This brings me to my last point. A more grim and somber point. Currently we sit at 28.3% Donations at the time of this post. We need to hit 100% by month’s end, that gives us about 9 days (give or take time zones). If we do not, or we do not come at least anywhere closer, this site will likely begin to permanently die, and close its doors permanently. Yes we love running the site, and providing this community to the users, but we can only fund it ourselves for so long before it becomes a financial sink. Take note, that NONE of the donations are taken as pay for any work we do for the site, every cent of the donated money goes to bringing a better experience to you.
